D is for DNA #atozchallenge
What is DNA?
DNA is an abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid. It determines the color of a person's eyes, hair color height and other characteristics.DNA is found with in the nucleus of each cell. There are many copies of DNA within each cell.
The DNA is made of nucleotides. These nucleotides are adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) and cytosine (C). The arrangement of these nucleotides are called a sequence. The sequence determines a characteristic. Blue eyes are ATCGTT while brown eyes are ATCGCT.
There are many uses for DNA. Physicians use DNA to develop medications for cancer patients. The DNA is a particular patient undergoes analysis and a medication is developed to treat that cancer's DNA.
Law enforcement uses DNA to solve crimes. A suspect's DNA is compared to the DNA in the National Database. If there is a match, it is used in court with the physical evidence to convict the suspect.
